I would suggest perhaps trying to telnet into the POP3 server (or setting up as IMAP4).

Start >> Run >> cmd >> enter

telnet pop3.people.net.au 25

See what happens – if you can’t get in, it might be an issue with the firewall.

My preferred solution however would be to set up the account as IMAP (POP3 is so 2001 ;) )

There are suggestions on how to do this in the People Telecom forums. Use google to search them using the site:forum.people.net.au command.
