Overstrike mode in Word for Mac

I work on a Mac computer.  In the program Microsoft Word, I have accidentally hit a key or combination of keys.  Now my computer is striking over currently typed letters instead of interjecting additional letters to the sentence.

What’s happened is you’ve accidently clicked on the Overtype icon at the bottom of the Microsoft Word screen.

Have a look at the bottom of the screen, you should find the status bar and you will see the OVR box has black writing. Click it and it will turn to gray and the problem will be gone.

    1. Andy Cuccaro Says:

If I wanted to purposely overstrike a word, to make it appear I made an error and cross it out, how would I do that?

    2. I can’t find the overstrike icon. Where is it, and what does it look like? It is not on the bottom bar of my Word document.

    3. MS has set the overstrike mode to OFF on its current MS Office suites; therefore, if you’d like it ON (‘like the good ‘ol days’!), you have to do the following:

      > with a Word document open, RIGHT click over the large circular icon in the upper left corner (where you left click to save a file or print)

      > click on “Custom settings…”

      > click on “Advanced”

      > you’ll see the indented “Turn on overstrke mode” with a check box; CHECK IT!

      > I also click on the check box above it to turn the Insert key to activate the overstrike mode when you want it

      > NOTE: Unlike the ‘good ol’ days’, when the letters “OVR” appeared in the toolbar at the bottom whenever Overstrike mode was on, it no longer shows up. Therefore, the only way you know it’s on or off is to type. Just hit “Insert” when you want to turn ON the overstrike mode, or turn it OFF if it’s already done.

      Vuela’!
